Black Locust Pen Blanks
Black Locust is one of the most dense trees in North America. It turns and finishes beautifully, though. The silica in the wood will dull your tools, so keep them sharp. The burls are gorgeous, as always. They will give you some trouble due to the wild grain. Sharp tools! The wood has a creamy yellow appearance, and the normal grain pattern is similar to oak or ash. It has a nice sweet smell when turning. This wood is often used for fence posts because it can sit in the ground for up to 75 years without rotting. Historical note: Abraham Lincoln working splitting Black Locust for extra cash for a time. This tree was taken down in Lake Oswego in Oct 2010. The blanks were cut green the ends were waxed (burls were fully waxed). No finish was applied to most of these, with the exception of the ones turned round.
On the left here is a twist style pen made with some of this burl. Center ring is Katalox. Finish is pre-catalyzed lacquer.

Normal Black Locust
7/8" x 5". Square, not round as shown.
These pieces are normal Black Locust. They turn very nicely and polish up to a glossy finish. These are a great heavy wood if you are looking to give your pens some weight, and they look very nice with contrasting black woods. They also look nice with a gun metal finish or a black titanium finish metal.
